The log-normal distribution is not an appropriate parametric model for shot length distributions of Hollywood films

چکیده

We examine the assertion that the two-parameter lognormal distribution is an appropriate parametric model for the shot length distributions of Hollywood films. A review of the claims made in favour of assuming lognormality for shot length distributions finds them to be lacking in methodological detail and statistical rigour. We find there is no supporting evidence to justify the assumption of lognormality in general for shot length distributions. In order to test this assumption we examined a total of 134 Hollywood films from 1935 to 2005, inclusive, to determine goodness-of-fit of a normal distribution to log-transformed shot lengths of these films using four separate measures: the ratio of the geometric mean to the median; the ratio of the shape factor σ to the estimator ∗ = 2 × ln / ; the ShapiroFrancia test; and the Jarque-Bera test. Normal probability plots were also used for visual inspection of the data. The results show that, while a small number of films are well modelled by a lognormal distribution, this is not the case for the overwhelming majority of films tested (125 out of 134). Therefore, we conclude there is no justification for claiming the lognormal distribution is an adequate parametric model of shot length data for Hollywood films, and recommend the use of robust statistics that do not require underlying parametric models for the analysis of film style.

Evaluation and Application of the Gaussian-Log Gaussian Spatial Model for Robust Bayesian Prediction of Tehran Air Pollution Data

Air pollution is one of the major problems of Tehran metropolis. Regarding the fact that Tehran is surrounded by Alborz Mountains from three sides, the pollution due to the cars traffic and other polluting means causes the pollutants to be trapped in the city and have no exit without appropriate wind guff. Carbon monoxide (CO) is one of the most important sources of pollution in Tehran air. The...

Statistical analysis of shot types in the films of Alfred Hitchcock Nick

This paper analyses the changing use of shot scales and shot types in the films of Alfred Hitchcock from The Pleasure Garden (1925) to The Birds (1963) in the context of the introduction of sound technology to British cinema in 1929 and the director’s move from Britain to Hollywood in 1939. A sample of 42 films was divided into 3 subgroups (British silent films [ = 9]; British sound films [ = 1...

Shot Scales in Hollywood

Statistical analysis is an important part of an inductive programme of research into film style enabling large groups of films to be analysed, identifying key trends, and identifying changes in film style between groups of films from different countries and time periods. In this paper, the use of shot scales in Hollywood and German cinema between 1910 and 1939 is analysed using linear regressio...
